Well, well, well...you finally made it! With the 27th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft the Boston Celtics select Robert Williams III. You’ve worked your entire life for this moment. Like many other kids, your probably grew up loving basketball with posters of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Lebron James on their wall. Now, your dream to play in the NBA has come true.
What a night and what a celebration. From this moment on you’ll be an NBA rookie, work hard, train hard and focus on being a great teammate and learn from those that came before you. That’s the deal. But, how do you repay the team that selected you? What kind of first impression do make? You oversleep and miss your introductory conference call. Sure, it happens. I mean, stuff happens right? Even with today’s technology, it’s hard to set an alarm, have a wakeup call, ensure your agent or other representatives have your best interests at heart by making sure you are on top of these important events. Things happen!
Ok, so you finally have your press conference, and you say the words “hard work” several times during your six minute introduction as the newest member of the Boston Celtics, one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. That’s right, you can’t wait to get to work. So you should be on your best behavior show up early, stay late do whatever is asked, showing your team you’re serious about being a Celtics. That all sounds great. That little oversleeping snafu was nothing more than an aberration and is now a thing of the past. No harm, no foul. You are now on a new path with a fresh start, right?
Hmmm well hell that was short lived because next you miss your flight and then your first practice with your new team. First off who the hell misses a flight to Las Vegas? Someone who doesn’t care! Guess what Robert Williams III, it looks like those reports about your work ethic were true, and...it appears that you just don’t get it. I hope you like seafood and small towns because you my friend are on your way to becoming a member of the Maine Red Claws. You have to earn the right to play in the NBA and that includes doing the little things. The Celtics did just fine without you on the roster.
Oh guess what else I forgot? The Celtics have plenty of draft picks in the upcoming drafts. So are you really needed on this team? I’m guessing not. This from a Celtics fan, who hopes for nothing but the best for my Celtics, my team, my squad! I can only hope you learn from these indiscretions and become a professional athlete. Remember just because you’re a professional athlete doesn’t mean you’re a professional.
